Antibacterial Soaps Kill the Bad AND Beneficial Bacteria

August 30th, 2011

In the August 25 edition of the journal Nature, you will find an article by Dr. Martin Blaser, MD discussing his research and concerns about the widespread use of antibiotics and how this might be causing permanent changes in the body’s protective, friendly flora. This in turn could be causing harm to the body’s overall natural defense system. Dr. Blaser worries that this might be more dangerous to our health than the unintentional development of what are known as “superbugs.”

The report discusses the fact that by the age of 18, most children have already had at least between  10 and 20 doses of antibiotics, in addition to the antibiotics provided to women who are pregnant. As wonderful as the discovery a of antibiotics was and still is helping to increase life expectancy, there is some controversy.Doe they destroy even friendly bacteria, not just harmful ones?  Scientists have found that some of the beneficial bacteria may never recover from a dose of antibiotics, and that these extinctions may lead to increased susceptibility to infections and disease. As a result, antibiotic use could be contributing to the increases in obesity, allergies and asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, and type 1 diabetes that are occurring throughout the developed world.

The discovery and use of antibiotics has helped to increase life expectancy, to be sure, but the fact is,  antibiotics are are non-discriminatory and destroy even friendly bacteria, not just harmful ones. Scientists have found that some of the beneficial bacteria may never recover and that these extinctions may lead to increased susceptibility to infections and disease among humans. As a result, antibiotic use could be contributing to the increases in obesity,  inflammatory bowel disease, allergies and asthma, and type 1 diabetes. These diseases  are occurring throughout the developed world.  This is all the more reason to use products that are truly organic, like Herbalix Restorative’s hand soaps and shampoos.

The same is with the skin.  Antibacterial soaps kill the bad and beneficial bacteria.  Herbalix shampoo and liquid hand soap work to leave the good bacteria while reducing any bad bacterial.  Most antibacterial soaps leave your hands dried out, but Herbalix soaps are goats milk soap, made from organic goat’s milk. -more-
