Why Crystal Rock Deodorant Is Not Aluminum-Free Deodorant

March 3rd, 2011

A category of natural mineral salt deodorants, crystal rock deodorant, is claiming to prevent odor before it starts.

On the other hand, most major brand deodorants use harsh chemicals to mask odor and actually stop sweat. Here’s how they typically work: the mineral salts form a topical layer on your skin. This is inhospitable to most of the bacteria that cause odor. Although the manufacturers of crystal body deodorant claim their products contain no alcohol, parabens, or aluminum chlorohydrate, they in fact do still contain Potassium alum and Ammonium alum compounds. Therefore they are not aluminium-free deodorants.

There is misleading science regarding the compounds potassium alum and ammonium alum when used in so called “natural” products. This is especially true in relationship to their use in crystal body deodorant. Most people believe that neither are actually components of aluminum, when in fact the alum in crystal deodorants is either potassium alum or ammonium alum.
